A car crashed into the La Petite Day Care Center in Yukon on Friday, sparking a fire, but thanks to the quick actions of the daycare staff, all 33 children and five adults inside were evacuated safely.
Scott Douglas of the Oklahoma City Fire Department praised the staff's training and preparedness, saying, "What a chaotic scene to have a car crash into your building, catch it on fire, and you're in a facility with 33 children inside."
The incident occurred when a Chevy Malibu collided with another vehicle, causing it to crash through the wall and ignite an electrical meter, resulting in the fire.
The male driver was hospitalized. The fire was exacerbated by the building's thermoplastic polyolefin roof, which Douglas described as "highly flammable" and "tough to extinguish."
The La Petite Academy expressed gratitude to workers, first responders, and the Yukon community in a Facebook post, stating:
"On Friday, an automobile crashed into our La Petite Academy on W. Reno in Yukon, OK, which led to a fire that caused significant damage to the school. Because of the professional response and quick action of our dedicated team and incredible families, all of our students and staff are safe and accounted for. This not only highlights the care and attention our staff members put into their work but also underscores the importance of our critical safety procedures and protocols for emergency situations such as this."
On behalf of our La Petite Academy family, we’d also like to thank our entire Yukon community for the support, care, and attention they have shown during this time.
Our school has served as a safe, nurturing place of care and education for so many families over the years, and the outpouring of support from neighbors, first responders, fellow ECE members, our State Licensing partners, and many more has been a reflection of the true heart of our community.
Over the next few days and weeks, we will be navigating next steps for moving forward as we work to ensure our families and staff members are cared for. For now, we are filled with gratitude for everyone’s safety and the ongoing support of our community."
The organization issued a statement to FOX 25 on Monday stating, "All families who have requested care are being accommodated at our nearby sister locations: La Petite Academy on Ottawa Place, La Petite Academy on NW 94th Street, and Childtime on N. Rockwell Ave. We are also in the process of placing our staff members at these locations as we work to create a seamless transition for everyone impacted. We are grateful for the continued support of the community and look forward to continuing to serve our families."
Douglas commended the daycare staff as heroes, emphasizing the importance of their calmness during the chaos.
The Oklahoma Police Department has not yet provided details on the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, CVS staff and KinderCare offered support by providing snacks and blankets to the children, exemplifying the "Oklahoma Standard."
