There have been plenty of musical switch-ups through the ages – Bob Dylan goes electric, Radiohead kick the guitars for Kid A, the Beach Boys trade surf for pop, Taylor Swift trades country for pop.

London-based, French-born singer-songwriter, Lewis Murray joined the legions of musical renegades at the turn of the year, when he launched his solo project with the lead single ‘Coasting’, surprising the scene by dropping the fuzzy-frenetic-&–feedback-laden guitar that had become the staple of his previous output, for a grand piano and small ensemble.
And the songwriting had changed too – it was grandiose, cinematic, orchestral, and akin to the chamber pop stylings of classic songwriters like Burt Bacharach, with hints to movie scores and jazz harmony. The volume had been lowered, and the noise quelled, but the songs had lost none of the edge.

Although the driven guitar and raucous riffing did make a glorious return in the single ‘Don’t Go Pretending’, which premiered on the online magazine ‘What The Funk’ in April, it’s still been keys that have been at the forefront of the project so far – and it was behind the grand piano where Lewis sat for the duration of his Backlight session. A hint at future direction of the project? Who knows. At only two singles in, this is a brand new, exciting, and unpredictable musical project from a hidden gem of the local scene – the perfect time to tune in.

Lewis was accompanied for his performance of ‘Coasting’ by conductor Ell Kendal, and his ensemble.
