Boogaloo!!! New York's Latin Soul from the 60's

In 1963 Mongo Santamaria performed in Latin format the blues-jazz "Watermelon Man" by Herbie Hancock becoming a bestseller in the North American music market. The same year Ray Barretto's "El Watusi" appears, a charanga with elements of Rhythm & Blues which became his first big commercial success and reached the top 20 of the North American billboard. These two songs inspired a new musical trend, the Boogaloo, a mixture of Afro-Caribbean rhythms with elements of Rock, Blues and Soul. The new rhythm was catchy, easy to dance to, which is why many Latin bands in New York performed this rhythm with the hope of seducing the American public, but the prejudices of the time made the good intentions fall into empty pockets. Very gringo for the Latino and very Latino for the gringo the musical novelty would be of short duration. By 1969 the fashion dissipated and bands began to rediscover their musical roots while creating what would later be called salsa. Today the Boogaloo is a musical example of integration and tolerance between cultures.

En 1963 Mongo Santamaría interpreta en formato latino el blues-jazz "Watermelon Man" de Herbie Hancock convirtiéndose en un éxito de ventas en el mercado musical norteamericano. El mismo año aparece "El Watusi" de Ray Barretto, una charanga con elementos del Rhythm & Blues la cual se convirtió en su primer gran éxito comercial y que llegó a los top 20 del billboard norteamericano. Estos dos temas inspiraron una nueva tendencia musical, el Boogaloo, una mezcla de ritmos afrocaribeños con elementos del Rock, Blues y Soul. El nuevo ritmo era pegajoso, fácil de bailar por lo cual muchas bandas latinas de Nueva York interpretaron este ritmo con la esperanza de seducir al público americano pero los prejuicios de la época hicieron que las buenas intenciones cayeran en sacos vacíos. Muy gringo para el latino y muy latino para el gringo la novedad musical sería de corta duración. Ya en el 1969 la moda se disipó y las bandas empezaron a redescubrir sus raíces musicales mientras creaban lo que luego se denominaría como salsa. Hoy en día el Boogaloo es un ejemplo musical de integración y tolerancia entre culturas.
