The Cramps were an American rock band formed in 1976 and active until 2009. Their lineup rotated frequently during their existence, with the husband-and-wife duo of singer Lux Interior & guitarist Poison Ivy the only ever-present members. The band had a mix of psychobilly, punk rock & rockabilly. The band split after the death of lead singer Lux Interior in 2009.
Crazy Al's in Broad Ripple with its eccentric vibe & alternative music, including new wave& punk as well as other genres & with its restaurant, quickly made the area the center of the Indianapolis counter-culture scene. Anytime at Al's you could see punk bands like Zero Boys , Latex Novelties & Toxic Reasons to acts like The Cramps , Go-Go’s & John Hiatt.
During Crazy Al’s decade-long existence, the restaurant brought attention to many local punk, new wave, rockabilly, & funk bands. Regional groups, including the Elvis Brothers. Plus Joan Jett, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, also performed at the venue. In 2014,
Rick Wilkerson produced a comprehensive 2 CD set with his label, TimeChange Records, called Indiana Punk and New Wave: The Crazy Al’s Year(s), featuring 38 bands with mostly original material.
