The legend of the Witch of Kilkenny centers around Alice Kyteler, a wealthy and influential woman in medieval Ireland. In the early 14th century, Alice was accused of witchcraft and devil worship. Her maid, Petronilla de Meath, was arrested, tortured, and ultimately burned at the stake after being forced to "confess." Alice herself managed to escape arrest and disappeared without a trace.
