"Wunder-Zikes" Double Up
Runnerup just a year ago, Les Zikes teamed with Steve Wunderlich to capture the $130,000 Columbia Senior/Touring Pro Doubles Championship. Zikes complemented Wunderlich as they topped the leading qualifiers, Carmen Salvino and Dave Busted, 266-187, in the title game.
It was Billy Walden and Bill Peters on top in the first game, defeating Les Schissler and Ron Bell, 206-182. Zikes and Wunderlich then swung into action and in the 10th frame Wunderlich drilled home a game-winning double for a 210-200 triumph.
Dick Weber and Joe Hutchinson were up next, but Weber suffered a 4-6-10 split in the fifth frame and the 4-6-7 split four frames later. That added up to defeat as Zikes and Wunderlich finished with four strikes for a 228-189 win and a shot at the title.
They were not to be denied. When Salvino missed a three-pin spare In the fourth frame, the match was all even, but Husted then missed the 3-6-10 in the seventh frame while Zikes and Wunderlich were busy stringing strikes for victory.
