New Zealand households are continuing to feel the squeeze, with new figures from Stats New Zealand showing food prices rising 4.0 percent in the 12 months to December 2025.
The biggest driver of the annual rise came from the grocery food group, which climbed 4.6 percent over the year. Meat, poultry, and fish jumped 7.4 percent.
Stats New Zealand highlighted several standout price movements:
• Milk now averages NZ$4.92 for 2 litres, up from $4.25 a year earlier — a rise of 15.8 percent.
• Porterhouse beef steak surged to NZ$44.3 per kilogram, up from $36.39 — an increase of 21.7 percent.
• White bread saw one of the steepest hikes, rising to NZ$2.2 per 600grams, up from $1.39 — a massive 58.3 percent annual jump.
But it’s not just food putting pressure on household budgets.
Energy costs also continued their upward trend. Over the year to December 2025, electricity prices rose 12.2 percent, while gas prices climbed 17.5 percent.
According to Stats New Zealand, “The price for powering a household continues to increase both monthly and annually. Since December 2021, electricity prices have risen by 27.3 percent, while gas has risen by 56.0 percent.”
For many families, these combined increases in food and energy costs are reshaping weekly budgets and adding to broader cost of living concerns heading into 2026.
