In other cases, different types of bulbs can help you get more from your fixtures. You'll want to choose the right bulb for performance and appearance.

For your favorite table lamp or free standing lamp, you'll need a general purpose bulb. There are some great alternatives to the traditional incandescent bulb.

There's GE energy smart® spiral® CFL. There's GE's Best Incandescent Soft White* Halogen, which provides the light qualities you love, but uses less energy. And there's a growing selection of GE LED light bulbs.

Above the fireplace, you'll often find a recessed downlight. It's a good idea to use an indoor floodlight for this application.

You'll find vanity strips and pendants in bathrooms and kitchens. Globes fit this kind of fixture because they add sparkle.

Decorative bulbs are the right fit for a chandelier. A candle shaped bulb compliments the look of your fixture, even when it's not lit.

For ceiling fans, look for an A15 bulb. This bulb is designed to resist vibration from the fan, and helping it last longer than a general purpose bulb.

For track lighting, you'll want to use a recessed light bulb, like an R20 or PAR20. These bulbs can provide the right accent or direct lighting for your room.

Finding the right fit also means buying the right base. There are a lot of different types, but most of the fixtures around your home will take a standard, an intermediate, or a candelabra base.

Check the base on your old bulb. Chances are it's a standard, also referred to as a medium or Edison base, which gives you the widest range of choices.

Think of it this way: A standard base is about the diameter of a quarter. An intermediate base is about the diameter of a dime. And a candelabra base is about the diameter of Lincoln's head on a penny.
