Many chemical reactions are very sensitive to oxygen and moisture, thus they react violently upon the tiniest bit of exposure to air. This is why it’s important to exclude air by any means.
That’s where the Schlenk line comes to the rescue: a #chemists most precious device! This helpful tool creates a so called inert atmosphere, meaning an environment free from oxygen and water. It is a dual manifold, with one line connected to a vacuum pump and one line connected to nitrogen or argon. With a system like this, highly reactive reactions can be handled without endangering oneself or others in the #lab. After all the last thing you want to do is having to call the fire department😉
