Why are plants not growing in RDWC Hydroponics system - Problems, and solution.

After nearly 3 weeks our tomato plants are not looking good. Curling leaves. Some spots. Generally weak looking plants. Any ideas?

For those of you who have been to the channel before, you would know this isn't the first time that we have failed to grow successfully in an RDWC system. See playlist below:

It was entirely our fault, and this time is no exception. We are constantly learning to grow using Hydroponics, and getting to know the in's and out's of water management is not easy.


After getting our water just right, before leaving our tomato plants to grow in the grow room, we came back only to find that they had not really progressed that much, and that the leaves, were showing signs of deficiencies. After testing and probing our water, we remembered about the softener in the basement. My water comes from a well in my garden and fluctuates throughout the year. I have a filter and a softener, that is also connected to the garden hose. Mad I know, and not normal practice as far as we are concerned.


A long story short, we needed to change the water fast to avoid loosing the plants all together. Softeners exchange Magnesium and Calcium for Sodium. In other words, they are bad for all plants.


We mixed our nutrients are balanced our pH levels etc in large containers before pumping it back into the RDWC. I will update you in a few days with the progress.
