There have been two Temples in Jerusalem, each with their own story and legacy. Solomon’s Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 585 BCE. The Second Temple was built after the return of the Jews from exile and lasted until it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE.

Proposals for a Third Temple on the Islamic holy site of the Al-Aqsa mosque are highly contested and play a divisive role in Christian theology and the politics of Israel/Palestine and the region.

We will explore the different dimensions of the Temple traditions to introduce these studies.
