In a 2009 interview, then-President Hugo Chávez dismissed accusations that he was “paranoid” about the United States, insisting that Washington’s hostility toward Venezuela was rooted in oil interests.
He argued that Venezuela possessed more than a century’s worth of oil reserves while the United States was facing depletion, and claimed that the US had repeatedly tried to impose a compliant government in Caracas to gain control over those resources.
Chávez pointed to what he described as a long history of US and CIA-backed coups and assassinations throughout Latin America, calling it a dark and damaging chapter for democracy in the region.
He cited several examples: Jacobo Árbenz in Guatemala, overthrown after pursuing land reform; Brazil’s João Goulart, removed with US support; Chile’s Salvador Allende, killed following a US-backed coup; Juan Bosch in the Dominican Republic, ousted after a US invasion; and Panama’s Omar Torrijos, whom Chávez claimed was assassinated by the CIA.
According to Chávez, these events were not isolated incidents but part of a broader, consistent strategy of US intervention aimed at suppressing independent governments and protecting imperial interests. Critics argue that the history of US-backed interventions is even more extensive than Chávez described.
He warned that this pattern remained relevant, pointing to the United States’ large-scale bombing campaign against Venezuela and the capture and forced removal of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife as a direct assault on the nation’s sovereignty.
Governments around the world condemned the operation as a violation of international law and an overt act of imperial aggression intended to seize Venezuela’s oil resources and undermine its political independence.
