In an idyllic hilly terrain, Indian Air Force officer Arun Varma (Rajesh Khanna) sings "Mere Sapno Ki Rani" atop an open jeep along with his co-pilot Madan (Sujit Kumar), while Vandana (Sharmila Tagore), the daughter of a Doctor Gopal Tripathi (Pahari Sanyal) demurely sneaks glances at him from a mini train,Arun meets Vandana when he goes to Gopal's help to treat Madan's fever. Madan and Arun befriend Tikaram (Asit Sen), Vandana's house servant and get his intel to get close to Vandana at every available opportunity. Air Commodore Ganguli (Ashok Kumar) is the boys CO in Shimla. Ganguli and Gopal know that Arun and Vandana love each other. After a brief romance, they have a secret wedding, which is a spur of the moment thing at a temple. A photo is taken as memory. They get trapped in a bad storm and take shelter in a local cottage. Arun gets randy and has sex with Vandana...
