The B-23 Dragon was a twin-engined bomber developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company in the late 1930s. It was designed as a successor to the B-18 Bolo, and was based on the DC-3 airliner, sharing its wing, tail and engines. The B-23 had a more streamlined fuselage, a retractable landing gear, and a glazed tail gun position. It was powered by two Wright R-2600-3 Cyclone 14 radial engines, each producing 1,600 hp. It could carry up to 1,800 kg of bombs and had four machine guns for defense. The B-23 had a maximum speed of 454 km/h and a service ceiling of 9,630 m.

The B-23 first flew on July 27, 1939, and 38 units were built between July 1939 and September 1940. However, it was soon outperformed by newer medium bombers like the B-25 Mitchell and the B-26 Marauder, and never saw combat overseas. It was mainly used for patrol missions along the west coast of the United States, and later for training crews. Eighteen B-23s were converted to transport and glider tug aircraft, and redesignated as UC-67. After World War II, some B-23s were sold on the civilian market and used as executive transports. Ten B-23s have survived, seven on static display, two in flying condition, and one as a wreck .
