Today we are visiting the Molla Zeyrek Mosque. Located in the Fatih district of Istanbul, overlooking the Golden Horn, it is a historical mosque and a Byzantine-Ottoman heritage site. Originally built as the Pantokrator Monastery Church, it is still used for worship today. History The structure was built during the Byzantine Empire between 1118 and 1136 as the Monastery of the Pantokrator. The complex was a monastery consisting of three sections, including churches dedicated to Jesus Pantokrator, Theotokos Eleousa (Merciful Mary), and Archangel Michael. During the Latin invasion, artifacts were looted, and valuable pieces were taken to Venice. After the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II (the Conqueror), it began to be used as a mosque and madrasa (religious school).
