Thousands of devotees congregated on the sacred town of Puri to witness the revered ritual of Deva Snana Purnima, preceding the renowned Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. This ceremonial bathing, rooted in the Skanda Purana, marks the cleansing bath of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra at the Jagannath Temple.
According to legend, the ritual was established by Raja Indradyumna during the installation of the wooden deities, making it a significant prelude to the upcoming festivities. Beyond Puri, Deva Snana Purnima is celebrated across Odisha, drawing pilgrims and locals alike.
The idols of the deities are ceremoniously carried from the Ratnasimhasan to the snana bedi, the ritual bathing altar, early in the morning. Water for this sacred bath is drawn from a well within the temple premises. Prior to the bathing, priests perform rituals and prayers, utilizing 108 pitchers of herbal and aromatic water for the ceremonial purification of the divine trio at the Jagannath Temple.
