Follow my journey through Grand Canyon on a Rim to Rim 24 Mile Day Hike. I got an early 4:00am start to try to beat the over 100* temps at the bottom of the canyon. Starting at North Rim of Grand Canyon on the North Kaibab Trail, I made a stop at Ribbon Falls, then hiked through The Box to Phantom Ranch, then across the Colorado River and up the Bright Angel Trail through Indian Garden and up to South Rim. This trek is quite a workout and descends about 5,800' down to the the Colorado River, then along the River for about two miles then ascends up the Bright Angel over 4,400' nearly 8 miles up to the South Rim, so you really get your exercise!

Grand Canyon is one of the best places to visit in the world, and one way to fully enjoy this destination is to cross it Rim to Rim. It’s a challenging endeavor, but so very rewarding. Whether you camp or stay at Phantom Ranch or cross in one day is up to you. Permits for camping and Phantom reservations are very hard to get, so doing it as a day hike becomes the option for most hikers. If you are a strong hiker or longer distance runner you are already a step ahead but you should train for this hike with your fuel and electrolytes and time on your feet. This is different in many ways than running a marathon, like taking more than twice as long to complete with the possibility of extreme heat and with the elevation gain of 4,460 feet at the end of the trek. So it’s still important to plan and train so that your Rim to Rim trip is an enjoyable and unforgettable experience of a lifetime !
