Nithyananda, also known as Nithyananda Paramashivam or Paramahamsa Nithyananda, is an Indian Hindu guru, godman, and cult leader. He founded Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam, a trust that owns temples, gurukulas, and ashrams in various countries. However, Nithyananda has been involved in multiple controversies and legal issues.
He has made pseudoscientific claims, such as delaying the sunrise, making cattle speak in languages, and challenging the validity of the mass-energy equivalence formula. Nithyananda has also claimed to possess over 400 paranormal abilities called siddhis and has allegedly initiated his disciples into 60 of these powers. He promised to open the third eye for anyone by 2021, granting them the ability to see through smog and walls. Disciples have claimed that he cured blindness in a class of 82 children by initiating them through the "third eye." These claims have been challenged by skeptics.
In 2010, Nithyananda faced controversy when videos surfaced allegedly showing him with an actress named Ranjitha in a bedroom. While Nithyananda and Ranjitha claimed the videos were fabricated, a forensic sciences laboratory confirmed their authenticity. Legal battles ensued between Nithyananda, Ranjitha, and media channels involved in the dissemination of the videos.
Nithyananda has also faced serious allegations of rape and abduction. A US citizen and disciple accused him of multiple rapes in both the US and India over a five-year period. Charges were framed against Nithyananda and five others in relation to the case, and a non-bailable warrant was issued after he repeatedly failed to appear in court.
In 2019, a couple from Tamil Nadu claimed that three of their children were taken to Nithyananda's ashram in Ahmedabad without their consent. The Gujarat Police filed an FIR for alleged abduction, but the missing children, who were now adults, denied being forcibly detained in affidavits filed from various locations in the Americas. They accused their father of plotting the abduction controversy to divert attention from an embezzlement case involving him.
Nithyananda is currently in hiding after fleeing India in 2019, and he is the subject of a non-bailable warrant related to the charges against him.
In recent news, Nithyananda and his self-proclaimed country, "Kailasa," have been involved in a scam that duped the city of Newark in New Jersey. Newark mistakenly entered into a "Sister City" agreement with Kailasa, believing it to be a real Hindu nation. The agreement was rescinded by the Newark City Council once the inauthenticity of Kailasa was discovered. It was revealed that other cities in the United States had also signed similar agreements with Kailasa, unaware that it was not a recognized country.
Kailasa, founded by Nithyananda, claims to be a movement established by members of the Hindu Adi Shaivite community from various countries. However, it is not recognized by the United Nations or the international community as a legitimate country. Despite this, Kailasa maintains a significant online presence, claiming various departments, a flag, a constitution, an economic system, a passport, and an emblem.
