On the bench today is the Gibson SG Standard 2014 - Heritage Cherry
I picked up an SG that was part of the 2104 120th Anniversary line. The guitar had Grover Rotomatic Locking Tuners installed. Two of the tuners were bent and needed to be replaced. I guessed that the guitar did not come with the Grover locking tuners. I figured someone had pulled the Min Etune tuners off and installed these.
I took the tuners off and was surprised to see that there was no indication of the Gibson Min Etune system ever being installed. I was confused. Did the guitar come with Grover non-locking tuners and someone installed the locking as an upgrade?
I did searches on the guitar’s specifications and could not find a match with Grover tuners. It has coil splitting on both volume pots and the pickups are Gibson 57 Classics. I was leaning towards a Gibson SG Standard but just could not find the exact model. Then I remembered I had done a video a couple years ago on removing the Min eTune system from an SG and I installed a set of Grover Rotomatic tuners. When I watched the video, I realized that when you removed the Min eTune tuners there are no installation markings left behind on the guitar. No marks and no holes. The Grovers drop in place and all you do is drill the screw hole on the back for each tuner.
Also, when I watched the video, it showed me how far I have come with producing videos for the channel. It is a horrible video where I did not have a script. I think I probably said the word “umm” at least a hundred times because I was winging it while talking about what I was doing.
Someone had pulled the truss rod cover and Min Etune tuners and then installed the Grover Rotomatic locking tuners and drilled the hole.
In 2014 Gibson started releasing guitars with the Min Etune system. A vast improvement over the Robotic Tuning System because it just had electronics on the headstock and was not integrated with the bridge components and the guitar’s wiring. It was received in the same way by the Gibson buying public as the Robotic Tuning System was – kind of on par with Coca Cola’s New Coke was when it was released.

Someone once told me that to tune a guitar is all part of the tactile experience and should not be messed with. From the reaction the Gibson purchasing public had to the Min eTune system they obviously kind agree with this comment. I am not saying that the Min Etune system does not work. It does. It is just different and change sometimes is not wanted or seen as an improvement.
The 2014 Gibson SG Standard, like many Gibson models that year, celebrated Gibson's 120th Anniversary, and often included some special features. It's important to note that while "SG Standard" refers to a general model, there are variations, especially with "120th Anniversary" features or specific retailer exclusives.
