Welcome to Abla's home, located just across the street from the Greening the Desert Project. Abla completed a permaculture course six years ago and has since transformed her property into the garden you see today. If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Abla yet, be sure to check out three of our previous videos, "Permaculture is Greening the Desert," Oct 2018 (   • Permaculture is Greening the Desert  ), "Permaculture in the Desert," May 2019 (   • Permaculture in the Desert  ) and "Two Years of Permaculture Application," Oct 2000 (   • Two Years of Permaculture Application  ).

During the last visit, several changes were made to the infrastructure. A new roof was installed, along with additional water tanks. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions preventing her from being home, Abla had to use her chickens for meat as they were suffering. She has since decided to no longer keep animals as part of her system due to her frequent travel and inability to care for them properly. In the garden, Abla has completed her annual chop-and-drop and is actively creating shade to protect young plants from overheating. The garden floor is covered in organic matter and rough mulch, and despite some damage from neighbor's dogs, the succulent groundcovers are thriving.

She is repurposing items to create trellises and containers for composting. She has a substantial amount of compost in progress, with both hot and cold compost methods being utilized. Additionally, she has created compost bags for clients to earn income. Her vermicompost farms are still operational, and she has a biochar system prepared for future use.

Alba's garden is an oasis of ease and comfort amidst the harshness of the surrounding landscape. Alba herself believes that building a garden like hers is not difficult, provided one knows how to arrange the components correctly and at the appropriate time. With a little effort, anyone can create a similar garden, and the reward of delicious and aromatic produce will make it hard to resist continuing.

Despite being neglected during the COVID years, this space remains abundant with food and foliage. Alba expresses her longing to be there whenever she is away.
