Records are made to be broken: Dušan Brinkhuizen smashed this one! | Studio Sessions Episode 13

In this Studio Sessions episode of The Birders Show, Chris and Diego are joined by someone with a big story to tell. Dušan Brinkhuizen is a biologist, birder, photographer and birdguide living in Ecuador. In 2015, he assembled a birding dream-team to make an attempt on the Big Day world record of 354 species in one 24-hour period; a record that they ended up smashing! The trio start by discussing the fascinating world of competitive birding as they go over past records, and then move on to the incredible logistics of “Team Ecuador’s” attempt, a journey that took Dušan and his team from the Ecuadorian Amazon, up and over the Andes, and down to the Pacific coast in just one day! Dušan talks about some of his strategies, and mentions some of the day’s highlights — from a Nocturnal Curassow in the Amazon basin, to the second ever Pied Water-tyrant recorded in Ecuador, and a very special Red-crested Cotinga that marked a huge milestone as the team crossed the Papallacta Pass. The guys then discuss Dušan’s new book, Birds and Mammals of the Galapagos, and talk about the challenge of writing a field guide in such a biodiverse place, before ending with a series of rapid fire birding questions.
