Between Alsace and Palatinate - Local Sausages & Pork Knuckle Skewers | At our Neighbour's Table

Описание к видео Between Alsace and Palatinate - Local Sausages & Pork Knuckle Skewers | At our Neighbour's Table

The small town of Scheibenhard(t) spans the German-French border and is truly divided into two. Across the Lauter river, residents Christian Müller, head of the volunteer fire brigade in Scheibenhardt with a ‘t’, and deputy mayor of Scheibenhard, Fabienne Buhl, maintain relations between Alsace and the Palatinate. Every year in June they all host the popular bridge festival in which villagers and visitors from both sides celebrate the German-French friendship with ox roasted over a spit, locally made sausages and pork knuckle skewers.

The Lauter River was declared the state border at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, since which time the small town has been divided across two countries. From 1871 until the end of the First World War, Scheibenhardt on the right of the Lauter belonged to the German Empire as part of the official Imperial Territory Of Alsace-Lorraine. All the while, the two communities remained separate.

Today, town residents take this unusual situation for granted and each have their own way of doing things, although they work to keep the two communities close. There’s a fire brigade on the German side, but they can’t cross the border even in an emergency, so Christian Müller and Fabienne Buhl work to overcome the bureaucratic hurdles of the two systems.

In terms of culinary traditions, the hearty Palatinate and Alsatian cuisines are quite similar. Often they cook the same dish, only using a different name. For Christian Müller on the Palatinate side, Alsatian ‘Baeckeofe’ – a vegetable and meat stew – is known as ‘Backesgrumbeere’. As a hobby hunter, his version uses his own game meat, He serves this up at the home of Fabienne Buhl during a gathering for councillors from both countries.

Fabienne’s speciality and family favourite is ‘Fleischknöpfle’ with white sauce and mashed potatoes. In both communities, the food is heavy, hearty and meaty!

There’s also meat at the bridge festival as well as baked fillet of pike-perch and cheesecake for dessert. Foods can be lighter in everyday life, for example the tarte flambée so popular throughout Scheibenhard(t), on this occasion prepared together by German and French kindergarteners on a visit over the river.
