1. Bring MANY thoughtful gifts to your guests to incite magic and excitement from them. (1:05)

One of Nardwuar’s signature moves is he ALWAYS brings MULTIPLE gifts for his guests, but they’re always so thoughtful like when he interviewed Snoop Dogg the first time in 2000, he kept giving Snopp a new gift every 2 minutes during the interview. The guy brought 10 different gifts for ONE person and it totally blew the guy’s mind and mine too frankly. The level of thoughtfulness that Nardwuar has is unique to the industry, never seen anything like it. He also uses the gifts as props to bring up cool angles of conversation with his guest.

There was this Red Foxx doll in Snoop Dogg’s first interview with Nardwuar and Snoop asked him if he could buy it for 8$, but the funny part was he kept increasing the dollar amount until he got to 40$ and that bit was so hilarious and amazing, because no other interviewer in the world could’ve brought that out of the interview. That’s the magic of Nardwuar. The lesson for all of us is to try and find a thoughtful gift for someone we want to impress or have deeper conversations with, it’s an easy way to make people feel special and allow them to open up with you in a powerful way like Nardwuar does so well.

2. Ask a few very detailed questions about someone’s life to show you did your homework. (3:08)

It’s almost scary to hear how detailed and specific his questions are for his guests, especially since many of them were before the Internet was a thing; so it really makes you wonder how in the world he knows all of this information. One of those interviews was when Nardwuar met Pharrell Williams. During the interview, he pulls out a Carl Sagan album on wax, gives it to Pharrell and says hey how did Carl’s work inspire the work you did with N.E.R.D, the band he used to be apart of and Pharrell literally stops the interview, looks at him and says this is the most impressive interview I’ve ever had in my life, where in the world did you get this? I don’t even have this album. When you mention something specific about a person’s life that many people don’t know, it immediately signals to the guest that you’re someone to be taken seriously and there’s so many different ways in how Nardwuar has achieved this in his interviews.

The lesson for all of us is really to take a step back and write down who are the 3 people we’d love to interview or have a conversation with that we are personally excited about and write down 3 questions that we feel would blow their minds. That’s the easiest way to practice writing 10/10 questions for others and building that muscle overtime. And it just so happens that for Nardwuar, the people he’d love to meet are in the music business so he’s focused on those interviews.

3. Stay composed + keep your cool while interviewing & booking guests. (5:33)

One of the things that impresses me the most of Nardwuar is in 30 years of him interviewing all these music legends; he’s been met with a ton of criticism, harsh feedback, people telling him he’s crazy in front of his face, that he looks weird, some people even bullied him; and yet Nardwuar always kept a positive attitude until the guests realized how well studied and seriously he takes his music interviews. I really respect that because anyone in his shoes would have given up a long time ago, yet 30 years later, the man is still interviewing some of the biggest names in music in the WAY he wants to conduct the conversation.

The lesson here is if you really care about your craft and you’re consistent enough with the right intentions at heart, the industry will eventually embrace you and that’s why today Nardwuar has so much respect in the industry and gets interviews really easily, he’s interviewed Snoop Dogg over 10 times in 20 years which is crazy to say the least; a good reminder for all of us that CONSISTENCY over a long time is the best way to get respect from your peers. If you love something to do it long enough your whole life, people will know about it and fall in love with you too.
