Actor Madhavan popularly known as Chocolate Boy was born on 1 June 1970 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. There he was born into a Tamil Iyengar family. His full name is Madhavan Balaji Ranganathan.

His father Ranganathan was a management executive at Tata Steel and his mother Saroja was a manager at Bank of India. Madhavan has a younger sister named Devika. He is a software engineer. He is currently in England.

He did his schooling from DBMS, Jamshedpur. School of English and B.Sc from Rajaram College, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Electronics.Military trained, Madhavan is a multi-talented professional from pursuing a degree in electronics to acting.He was awarded in NCC in Maharashtra. He got a chance to go to England. Madhavan trained in the British Royal Army, Royal Navy and Air Force. He thought of joining the army. But was rejected because of his age.

Later, Madhavan returned to India and started teaching speaking and personality development skills at a workshop in Kolhapur. Later, he joined Mumbai's Kishinjand Sellaram College to pursue his master's degree in public speaking. While he was pursuing his Master's degree, he got an opportunity to represent India at the Young Entrepreneurs Conference held in Tokyo, Japan in 1992. Meanwhile, she built her portfolio for a modeling agency.

He started his acting career in the year 1994 with small screen. In Bollywood, she played the role of Maddy in Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, an important film that showcased her performance. After that movie she was called Maddy. After that he acted in many movies in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu etc.

Madhavan met his wife Sarita Birjai for the first time in 1991 as a flight attendant. The couple dated later and got married in 1999. The couple has a son named Vedant.Madhavan has been a great father to his son Vedant. Even before Madhavan entered the film industry, his son had come to this earth. His wife Sarita has worked as a costume designer in many of his films.

In 2019, Madhavan's son represented India at the Asian Age Games and won a silver medal in the swimming championship.
Vedant is a national level swimmer. Vedant made his father proud by winning 3 gold medals and a silver medal at the Junior National Swimming Championships.
