Lesson begins with clips of people surfing on the water, playing indoor tennis and skateboarding, juxtaposed with an exposed beating heart. This leads to a brief look at other species including a chick embryo (whose heart beats several thousand times an hour), before going to the human heart which beats an average of 36 million times a year. Aristotle's description of the heart as "the center of intelligence" is contrasted with later research which showed no such correlation between heartbeat and intelligence, and a discovery of 17th-century English scientist William Harvey that the heart circulates the same blood around the body. This leads into a detailed description of the infrastructure of the heart ("two separate pumps in one") including atria, ventricles, the aorta and various arteries (including coronary), and how it all works; accompanied by pertinent illustrations, film clips, charts and microscopic looks at the various sections. A cross section of a lobster shell is shown to illustrate the process of the heart's motions, with dye inserted into the tissues, followed by a look into a rabbit's ear and the veins, arteries and capillaries inside. Illustrations of the connections show red (arteries coming out of the heart) and blue (veins going back in). An electronic pacemaker is shown to illustrate how we have built-in pacemakers, and an example of diastole (relaxation) is shown. Different artificial pacemakers are then demonstrated in cases where one's heart can't work on its own, as are artificial heart valves; film of surgery of installation of such equipment is shown, with pertinent description. The effects of smoking on the heart are looked into, as are narrowing of arteries that lead to angina, blood clotting (leasing to heart attacks, strokes if in the brain, or gangrene in extremities) and other problems. The lesson ends with film of blood flow through various arteries.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:
