I made a video previously about loading your golf shaft. This is a follow-up about the unloading of the golf shaft. It is very important to unload your golf shaft at the correct time in your downswing. Too early or too late and you will sacrifice speed, distance, and accuracy. Each golf shaft is unique in the way that it loads and unloads.

   • How to Properly Load Your Golf Shaft  

The golf shaft stores energy as it loads on the backswing. When you time the unloading of this correctly, your shaft is responsible for giving you extra speed and distance. This is why many professional long drivers are going to softer setups. The softer the setup (less CPM and more whippy), the harder and faster the shaft can unload and "kick" at the golf ball. This increases speed. A stiffer setup will lead to more accuracy because it has less unloading which allows for less room for error in timing. Regardless, timing the shaft unloading is still incredibly important.

The shaft unloading occurs when the hands slow down in the downswing allowing the club head to catch up and hit the golf ball. It may not look like it, but your hand speed almost comes to a complete stop at the golf ball. The faster the swing, the faster the stopping, and the faster the shaft unloads.

Your grip will determine what feel you have as the club unloads at the ball. A weak grip will feel more like flexion and extension of the wrist (up/down) while a strong grip will feel more like ulnar and radial deviation (side/side). This is a very basic understanding of a highly complex thing in the golf swing. There will be many more videos about the shaft unloading to come.
