While anyone can get video, capturing the best shots is important when you are trying to sell footage.

While you want to capture interesting subject matter, it is equally—if not more-- important to make sure you have a clear shot. At Stringr, we encourage you to use these simple guidelines to capture useful clear and beautiful shots.

The first thing you need to do is determine what you want to capture or where the action is taking place. Depending on the type of shot you are trying to capture, find the angle that will give you the clearest shot of your subject.

Once you have your angle, try framing your subject using the rule of thirds. This 3x3 grid helps you position subjects along intersecting lines to get an interesting shot. (thirds grid on screen).

When recording a person align them along the left line or right line and always be aware of headroom. You don’t want too much space above their heads, but you don’t want to cut off the head either, unless it’s a close-up. Also be sure to have lead room in the direction they are facing, so they are not trapped and looking at the edge of the frame.

Lets take a look at a few sample shots to avoid and how to fix them.

Try to avoid framing shots with poles, trees, and other objects that can get in the way of your subject.

Before hitting record, look at your shot and see if everything you’re trying to capture is in the frame with no obstructions ruining the view.

Double-check the shot for dead space such as headroom and the direction of the lead room.

Feel free to experiment with a variety of differently composed shots, just capture the basic clear ones first because clear shots are more likely to be purchased. And make sure to hold each shot for at least 5-10 seconds!
