We spoke to Corey Hawkins at the London Premiere of The Man in My Basement. He plays Charles Blakey, a man whose life is turned upside down when Willem Dafoe’s mysterious character arrives with an unsettling proposal.

Directed by Nadia Latif, the film also stars Anna Diop, Jonathan Ajayi, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr., Pamela Nomvete, and Tamara Lawrance. Based on Walter Mosley’s acclaimed novel, it is a gripping psychological thriller that examines trauma, family, and survival.

The Man in My Basement opens in UK cinemas on 12 September 2025, before arriving on Disney+.

Plot:
In Sag Harbour, New York, Charles Blakey (Corey Hawkins) is out of work, out of luck, and on the verge of losing his ancestral home. A knock on the door from mysterious businessman Anniston Bennet (Willem Dafoe) brings a strange proposition: rent out his basement for the summer in exchange for enough money to clear his debts. Once Charles agrees, he’s pulled into a terrifying psychological game that confronts family ghosts, race, trauma, and the very roots of evil. Adapted from Walter Mosley’s acclaimed novel.
