This super inspiring lecture talks about the spiritual topic of the story of Hanukkah (story of chanukah), and an ancient secret that the Maccabees (Hasmoneans) knew that allowed them to defeat the massive greek army and empire in the hanukkah story. The reason we light the menorah on this “Festival of lights”, is because of the great spiritual darkness that was removed from the world during the hanukkah miracle. Before the had their miraculous war with the Greek empire, the Maccabees fasted for 3 days and nights. And they were old righteous men, who sat and learned torah all day. They were not fighters or warriors in any sense of the word. And the fact that they fasted? That means that they were the weakest men possible to be going out to battle. But they won. Because God was with them. And that is the same thing for us. That even if we are the weakest, and feel like the lowest people in the world to be serving God and living a spiritual life, we too can succeed, because God is with us. That is the kabbalistic secret of God’s name “Havayah” meaning “I will be”. When we pray to God, his answer is I will be. Where? With you. With each and every one of you. That’s us. So even if we don’t feel like we are warriors like the Hasmonean Maccabees and the sons of Mattathias, or like Judah Maccabee, and even if we don’t feel like we can have our own Hanukkah story and Hanukkah miracle, here’s the secret - neither did the Maccabees. But they stayed strong to their faith, and prayed, and trusted God (Hashem), and as a result, created the Jewish holiday that we all know, Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.
