The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) toy line began in 1988 when Playmates Toys launched action figures based on the then-underground Mirage Studios comic, and it quickly exploded in popularity alongside the 1987 animated TV series. The original figures were brightly colored, heavily stylized, and packed with gimmicks, vehicles, and playsets, helping make TMNT one of the biggest toy phenomena of the late 1980s and early 1990s. After the initial boom faded in the mid-1990s, TMNT toys went through several reboots tied to new cartoons, movies, and comics, including the darker 2003 animated series, the 2012 Nickelodeon CGI series, and the live-action films starting in 2014. Playmates has remained the primary license holder for kid-focused toy lines, while companies like NECA later expanded the brand into highly detailed collector figures based on the original comics, cartoons, and films. Over time, the TMNT toy line has become known for constantly reinventing itself while maintaining a strong sense of nostalgia, making it popular with both new fans and longtime collectors.
