European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored India’s growing importance on the global stage, stating that when India succeeds, the world becomes more stable, prosperous, and secure. Her remarks reflect the European Union’s recognition of India as a key pillar in shaping global economic and strategic stability.

The statement was made during a joint engagement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside the announcement of the landmark India–European Union Free Trade Agreement. The pact is expected to significantly enhance market access, with the EU set to eliminate tariffs on a majority of its exports to India, while Indian sectors such as textiles, leather, and pharmaceuticals gain expanded entry into European markets.

Signed on January 27, 2026, the agreement marks a major step forward in India–EU economic relations. It aims to ease long-standing trade barriers, boost two-way commerce, and strengthen the strategic partnership, with EU estimates suggesting a substantial rise in annual trade volumes in the years ahead.
