Panel 3 — AI & Us: How Policy Can Help Us Live With AI

This theme will delve into two main sub-topics. First, we want to look at how policy can help mitigate the existential risks associated with AI. We will be asking whether it is the government’s responsibility to protect us from doomsday scenarios and debating whether it has the institutional capacity to keep these promises. Second, we will look at the practical implications of living with AI (that is, if we do manage to survive). Broadly, this means looking at the ways we can promote the ethical use of AI in society; from generating misinformation to concerns about copyright infringement, we aim to look at how decisionmakers can help make AI compatible with societal values. The aim of this panel is to encourage open and critical discussion about a very real future with a technology that many of us struggle to fully understand.
