Peru is experiencing major unrest following a sudden change in government. On Wednesday, October 15, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Lima in the first large-scale demonstration against interim President Jose Jeri, just days after he assumed office. Protesters gathered near the Legislative Palace in downtown Lima, attempting to breach metal security barriers, burning flags and plastic objects, and marching toward Congress. Police responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The protests erupted six days after President Dina Boluarte was removed from office and replaced by Jeri, who, as head of Congress, was first in the line of succession. Public anger over rising crime, extortion, and attacks on transport workers fueled the demonstrations. Civic groups, labor and transport unions, and Generation Z youth—who had previously protested demanding Boluarte’s resignation—organized the protests through social media.
