Mum and Dad were a tale for their times. But also... to me Mum's willingness to learn to cook the food of Dad's family speaks really strongly to the pull of what food means. When I teach, I talk about the depth of connection that spice provides within all of India's differing ethnic communities, and diverse faith traditions.
