They ate rats in Looe, Cornwall!

We stumbled across this wonderful story of how they ate rats in Looe, Cornwall in the nineteenth century.

In 1850, Wilkie Collins, Victorian novelist and play write, toured Cornwall and wrote an account of his adventures. One of the places he visited was Looe, and he was told how the people rid themselves of an infestation of rats on Looe Island by killing them and immediately eating them smothered in onions.

In todays video we visit Hannafore and, with a fantastic view of Looe Island, wonder if this could actually be true. Have you ever eaten rat?

Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.

Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
