We are going to be examining the body, the interior and the mechanical aspects of the car as well. Let’s begin!

First the body - When looking at the body there are a few things you should take into account. The first is body gaps - body gaps are when panels on a car do not match up perfectly, they may look a bit lopsided, have a large gap between panels and the panels may not be sitting flush. This can be a sign that the car has been in an accident or has had bodywork done. This is not a deal-breaker by any means, but it is good to know and good to keep in mind.

Next is scratches, rust, paint chips and cracking - and these can be signs of a number of different things. With rust, it’s important to know the extent of the rust damage - Rust can be a big problem especially in coastal areas where there is salt from the ocean. Cracking in the paint can be a sign that the paint was low quality or was not applied properly to a car and a scratch can sometimes mean that there is metal exposed can, which can cause rust in the future. With all of these items, none of them are deal-breakers and all of them are repairable - But, it is important to be aware of these so that you know what you are getting into and of course, some of these can help you negotiate when it comes to paying for the car.

Next is the interior - The interior is up to personal preference and for the most, nothing with the interior is going to be a huge deal-breaker. Make sure to check if the windows work, the locks work and all the control buttons work (radio, turn signals horn...etc). You will want to turn the A/C on max and make sure the car blows COLD air (not cool., not room temperature) -- this is important because A/C repair is extremely expensive. Also, turn on the heater, does the car heat up and get hot? Heating problems can sometimes be a sign of coolant or radiator problems.

One important thing with the interior is to check for dampness - dampness of any kind can be a sign of a flood car. So, feel the floorboards, look in the trunk - if there are any signs of dampness or that there was standing water in the car at one time, this is a huge red flag.

Lastly is mechanical items - this is by far the most important aspect of a car. Because the interior can be fixed, the exterior can be fixed and mechanics can be fixe as well but it can be a huge mess if you don’t know what you are doing!

First, when looking at the mechanics of the car check the oil - how does the oil look? You want it to not be too dark (this can be a sign that the oil has not been changed for a long time) you also want to make sure it is smooth, not chunky, watery or milky.

You’ll also want to look into the engine bay - is there oil or fluids in the bay? Do you see grease or buildup of any kind? This can be a BAD sign, and if you do see any of these signs I would pass on any vehicle.

But, the mechanics of a car aren’t limited to just the engine bay. Check the tires, brakes, and rotors - are these in good condition? If not, it’s certainly not a deal-breaker as tires, brakes, and rotors can all be easily replaced, but this does give you some negotiating power if they need to be replaced. When looking at rotors you want to make sure that there aren’t any grooves in the rotors. For brakes, you want to make sure there is some pad life left, and for tires, you want to make sure the tires have tread and there is no cracking in the rubber - cracking can be a sign that a tire is old, and just because a tire has tread doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe to drive. An old tire is one that will need to be replaced.

You also want to make sure to drive the car - when driving the car make sure you don’t hear any unusual sounds. Make sure the car can steer straight, make sure there are no vibrations. When you turn on the car make sure the odometer matches the carfax, make sure no lights come on when driving. You will want to test acceleration and braking - does the car brake okay? Does it accelerate okay? Is there any odor coming from the car? - like a gas or exhaust smell?

Once you’ve gone through and looked over all of these things then you have completed your pre-purchase inspection! Not all of these items are deal-breakers, in fact, it is normal for cars to not be 100% perfect. These are all great things to keep in mind when purchasing a car and if you follow the steps outlined, I am confident that you can buy a quality vehicle in any price range!
