The Lingayats today play a significant role in the political, social and cultural life of Karnataka. But who are the Lingayats? A journey in search of the origin of this group takes one to the Sharana community. The community was formed by more than 130 radical Vachanakaras during the 12th century AD. The new community, which included people from cobblers to kings, wrote Vachana (short poetry-prose). Vachana was written in Kannada. Members of this community came to be known as Lingayata. About 12,000 Vachanas, authored by over a 100 spiritual-seekers, including 30 women, have been found so far.
