SPOKANE, Wash. -- Childcare is at risk of becoming even more expensive, and less accessible.

At the end of September, $24 billion worth of federal childcare stabilization grants, presented through the American Rescue Act, expired. This loss threatens to close childcare centers, increase the cost of the ones that are left, and cause more problems for parents.

According to a study from The Century Foundation, an estimated 70,000 childcare centers are expected to close, causing 3.2 million kids to lose care.

Kenzie Duclose has had her baby on a wait list since before he was born. Almost 11 months have gone by, and still, no spots are available.

"It's a little stressful trying to figure out if our baby will be able to go to childcare and if not, what we'll be able to do to juggle both work and childcare at the same time," said Duclose.

With the loss of funds, many childcares are forced to cut corners and decrease their staff, causing limited space for kids. Community Minded Enterprises helps families simplify finding care through a new platform.

According to Community Minded Enterprises' CEO John Hindman, the platform allows parents to find a provider quickly, to maximize the slots that are available.

Hindman says Washington lawmakers have given some funding to help organizations like theirs, help you. allowing Washington to not be hit as hard as other states.

This allows Community Minded to work with childcares, and offset some of the costs that would be put onto parents.

Hindman says while these programs do help the problem, the crisis has grown too big to be solved in the near-future.
