The Rajapaksa family has ruled Sri Lanka for nearly two decades since 2004. But after months of protests in a movement called “the struggle”, the dynasty appears to have come to an end. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned and ceded power to the prime minister on July 13, 2022, making him the last of his family to remain in office. But how did this political dynasty fall so far, so fast? And how did they contribute to Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis since its independence?
