Richard Georg Strauss was a prominent German composer and conductor, born in Munich on June 11, 1864, and died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on September 8, 1949. He is widely recognized as a central figure in the transition from late Romantic music to the modernism of the 20th century.

The son of Franz Strauss, a renowned horn player at the Munich Opera, Richard began studying music at an early age. Before the age of ten, he had already composed a serenade for wind instruments. In 1885, he became an assistant to conductor Hans von Bülow and soon took over the direction of the Meiningen orchestra.

Strauss initially distinguished himself through his orchestral works, such as the tone poems Also sprach Zarathustra and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. Between 1886 and 1898, he produced a series of compositions that impressed the musical world. His operatic career began to flourish after collaborating with poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, resulting in classics like Salomé and Der Rosenkavalier.

In addition to his operas, Strauss is known for his songs (lieder) and symphonic works, including Four Last Songs and An Alpine Symphony. He also engaged in social and political issues during his life, being a defender of the Hohenzollern dynasty during World War I. After the war, he was internationally welcomed despite the political controversies surrounding him during the Nazi regime.

After World War II, Strauss was exonerated from any ties to Nazism. He continued to compose until his later years, receiving acclaim for his contributions to classical music. His last significant work was composed shortly before his death in 1949.
