The first two CDs were from a merch desk. Current Maschera di Cera drummer Andrea Orlando also plays for La Coscienza di Zeno and the live set of IL GIRO DEL CAPPIO completed my CdZ collection. OUT OF THE GATE by Alessandro Corvaglia is an eclectic mix of prog that covers some important topical social issues, features Gordon Giltrap and covers Peter Hammill’s VISION.
Other freshly acquired music included Kansas’ LEFTOVERTURE and LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH ODEON VOL 2 by the Enid, bought at a vintage fair in Beckenham; discs 13 and 14 of UNION 30 LIVE were sold independently of the box set, these representing the Yes London show which I attended; BEGINNINGS by Steve Howe and Barbara Thompson’s Paraphernalia LIVE IN CONCERT were from Rollin Records, West Wickham. The material on the Paraphernalia album was recorded around the time I’d gone to see the band.
Another trip to Italy resulted in the jazzy TRUSCIANT by Il Baricentro, an unofficial but high-quality Gentle Giant LP CAPITOL STUDIOS WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, CARONTE by The Trip and a pre-loved copy of the English language Banco del Mutuo Soccorso LP BANCO bought from Milan’s Dischivolante. The limited edition Balletto di Bronzo double LP LEMURES, limited edition LP PANGEA E LE TRE LUNE by La Cerchio d’Oro, Monkey Diet's ANT DEATH SPIRAL and Malombra T.R.E.S. CDs all came from Genoa’s Black Widow Records. LEMURES is bombastic, over-the-top, theatrical and brilliantly played. ANT DEATH SPIRAL is primarily a blend of psyche and intense post-rock and the dark prog that makes up Malombra’s T.R.E.S. was recorded in the 80s but remained unreleased until this year when the band recently reformed.
REVERIE, from Tony Lowe’s ESP Project makes its appearance after the download featured in last month’s playlist. Combining symphonic and cinematic elements, it’s jumped to the top of the list of my favourite ESP releases where the exquisitely produced widescreen sound is complimented by yet another gorgeous CD package.
Seven downloads feature in the list. Polychrome is a French five-piece band whose EQUILIBRIUM is a well-produced art-rock concept album.
Croydon’s The Resonance Association have put out the EP length SPACE TIME POLITICS, the first track from a forthcoming album. It's archetypal TRA post-rock.
Norwegians MÍO are about to release INGEN TID Å MISTE (No time to lose). Their attitude is punk and the short songs catchy psyche-folk, all sung in Norwegian. It’s a genuinely joyous, experimental album.
Asceta hail from Chile and were formed by guitarist/flautist Rodrigo Maccioni by combing a traditional rock quartet with a classical quartet. Debut album ASCETA is chamber-prog of the highest order and can be favourably compared to the best RIO acts.
STATI EQUIVOCI DELL'ESSERE by Il Sogno di Rubik involves a collaboration with Richard Sinclair. It's complex music which hints back to classic progressivo italiano groups like Museo Rosenbach.
Maud the Moth and Tradejesaliva's BORDANDO EL MANTO TERRESTRE is filled with ambient, ethereal soundscapes, dialogue and vocalisation. It concerns the personal development of Spanish-born surrealist painter Remedios Varo who lived in exile in Mexico until her death in 1963.
OISOLÜN by Oiapok combines unusual instrumentation with conventional rock instruments and vocals that sound somewhere between Björk and Lisa Gerrard. The French octet describe the album as an eco-manifesto that transcends the boundaries of progressive rock with Future Jazz.
