The financial industry needs to pay more attention to biodiversity and nature, as
the health of our planet has significant implications for the economy and financial
system, Günther Thallinger – CEO of leading insurance company Allianz – makes
clear in his riveting DLD Nature talk.

One example is pollination: In some areas of the world so many insects have
disappeared that humans have to pollinate plants – an expensive, laborious task.
“I’m an investor, but you don’t need me, for sure, not to explain that this kind of
process is not that efficient and effective as if there were a bee flying through that
blossom”, Thallinger says.

Damage to nature, such as deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and overuse of
resources, is leading to increased costs and risks for the financial sector through
higher insurance premiums, supply chain disruptions, and asset devaluation.

Thallinger also addresses the need for regulation and pricing in the true value of
nature for the global economy and much more.
