Hello friends welcome to my channel Pathology Gyan, My name is Akash Prajapati Today's topic is Depression Symptoms.
What is Depression? - Depression meaning in Hindi
We are all familiar with feelings of sadness, feeling down, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. But when these symptoms persist for a longer period and significantly impact our lives, it is called depression.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the most common illness worldwide – affecting approximately 350 million people globally.
Depression is a mental health disorder. Specifically, it is a mood disorder. The experiences of people suffering from depression vary. It can interfere with your daily functioning, relationships, and can even worsen some pre-existing health problems.
It's important to understand that mood swings are different from depression. We experience mood swings in our normal and healthy lives. Our temporary emotional responses to the challenges of daily life do not constitute depression. However, if you remain sad and hopeless for a prolonged period, you may have depression.
Depression is considered a serious medical condition that can worsen without proper treatment. Those who seek treatment often see an improvement in symptoms within a few weeks.
Types of Depression - Types of Depression in Hindi
How many types of depression are there?
There are several different types of depression, including:
1. Major Depressive Disorder
In major depression, a person experiences profound sadness and hopelessness. The main characteristic of major depression is a combination of symptoms – including difficulty functioning, studying, sleeping, and eating. Major depression can occur only once, but it often recurs several times throughout a person's life.
2. Psychotic Depression
Approximately 25% of people hospitalized for mental depression suffer from psychotic depression. In addition to the symptoms of depression, people with psychotic depression also experience symptoms such as hallucinations, irrational thoughts, and paranoia.
3. Dysthymia and Chronic Depression
Dysthymia is referred to as persistent depressive disorder. To be diagnosed with dysthymia, the symptoms must be present for at least two years in adults and one year in children or adolescents.
It is not a severe form of depression, but its symptoms can last for many years. People with dysthymia are usually able to function normally but always seem unhappy. Dysthymia and major depression are different. The symptoms of dysthymia are less severe than those of major depression.
4. Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) occurs at the same time every year. Typically, it begins in the winter and ends in the spring or early summer. A rarer form of SAD is "summer depression," which begins in the spring or early summer and ends in late summer.
People with SAD experience symptoms of major depression such as sadness, irritability, loss of interest in usual activities, social withdrawal, and difficulty concentrating.
5. Bipolar Depression
In this type of depression, the mood fluctuates between periods of extreme sadness and periods of extreme happiness for several weeks or months. Sadness is accompanied by negative thoughts, while manic episodes involve elevated moods and grandiose thoughts. The affected person's mood alternates between two distinct and opposite states. Sudden changes in behavior are observed in this illness. The patient is sometimes very happy and sometimes very sad. This is different from bipolar disorder.
