After his studies in art history, film studies, and philosophy pijbes fulfilled several art related positions with exhibitions all over europe. In 2008 Pijbes was appointed as General-Director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and in 2013 he was awarded as Dutch national of the year.

Thanks to his entrepreneurial spirit the Rijksmuseum regained its prestigious and famous status. The renovation of the museum with its controversial location and bicycle path passing underneath nowadays welcomes 2.45 million visitors a year.

One of the most special moments since Pijbes’ appointment as General-Director was Barack Obama’s visit who said the Rijksmuseum was the most impressive decor where he had ever given a press conference.
