The US military has seized the Russian-flagged oil tanker Marinera in the North Atlantic over alleged violations of US sanctions. The 28-member crew includes three Indian nationals, two Russians, 17 Ukrainians, and six Georgians. The tanker, previously named Bella 1 and operating under Guyana’s flag, was tracked from the Caribbean before being intercepted northwest of Scotland. The US Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security coordinated the operation, with the ship’s captain temporarily registering it under the Russian flag. Contact with the vessel was lost following the boarding, as the seizure raises international legal and diplomatic questions.
