Inaugural mega Book Fair opens in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, December 19, 2023 — The inaugural mega Book Fair, showcasing over 20,000 titles spanning various genres, kicked off on Wednesday at the town hall, Phungreitang in Ukhrul town.

Organized by the Thawaijao Hungpung Young Students Organisation (THYSO) in collaboration with Bookculture/Northeast, the event is set to run until December 22.

The opening ceremony featured Ukhrul District Commissioner Zuringla Kengoo and Ukhrul Zonal Education Officer Thaimei Badan as chief guest and special guest.

Addressing the function, DC Kengoo commended THYSO for the initiative, emphasizing the crucial role of such events in fostering a reading culture within the community, particularly among students. "Reading is essential for future success," she urged, encouraging students to embrace the habit.

In a similar vein, ZEO Badan urged young attendees, especially students to recognize the importance of reading in achieving academic success. "Without a reading habit, academic success is unlikely," he stated.

THYSO President Hubert Lunghar expressed pride in hosting Ukhrul's first large-scale book fair, hoping it would ignite a passion for reading and provide the community with access to a diverse range of literature. He also announced plans to make the book fair an annual event starting this year.

The Book Fair features a wide variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, young adult, and children's literature. Attendees can take advantage of exciting promotions, such as buying books by the kilogram, a "buy two, get one free" offer, and discounts of up to 50% on select titles.

Interactive sessions are scheduled for December 19, featuring storytelling and sketching activities for students. The event will culminate on December 22 with book reading sessions led by renowned authors Iknguira L Shimray and Thingamphy Haoram.

The inaugural day saw a strong turnout, with members of local civil society organizations, students from various schools and colleges, and enthusiastic community members coming together to celebrate literature and learning.
