(8 May 2018) A Tehran-based political analyst says Iran is likely to pull out of the nuclear deal and even the Non-Proliferation Treaty if the withdrawal of the United States deprives it of the nuclear deal benefits.
Jalal Barzegar who watched US President Donald Trump's announcement on Iran nuclear deal late on Tuesday, said that Iran will assess resumption of US nuclear sanctions at Trump's order over the next weeks and will abandon the deal if they harm Iran's benefits from the deal.
He called Trump's decision the failure of 14 years of efforts to reach an agreement and added that the position taken by rest of the parties to the deal will determine Iran's decision to remain in it or not.
Iran's 2015 nuclear deal imposed restrictions on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program in return for the lifting of most of the US and international sanctions against Tehran.
However, the deal came with time limits and did not address Iran's ballistic missile program or its regional policies. Trump has repeatedly pointed at that, while referring to the accord as the "worst deal ever."
However, proponents of the deal have said those time limits were to encourage more discussion with Iran in the future that could grow into addressing those other concerns.
