A gray fox family moved into one of our dens on May 25th. There is only one kit so far, but we hope that at least one more will arrive later. The parents are a pair of foxes whom we know quite well, named Dolly and Broken Ear.

We think the kit was probably born in mid-April.
The den is man-made (well, Dan-made, to be specific). There's a single camera inside and some soft white light. (The light ensures that the video is always in color, not infrared/black & white.) The entryway is a long hollow log, and it has a camera, too, so you will be able to see the foxes coming and going. Finally, there is a tiny rear entrance. It's hard to see on the inside-den camera - it's in the back wall, to the right of center. The kit is already using it get in and out - it's too small for an adult fox.

The area around the den is encircled by a big brush barrier. The foxes can slip through it or over it easily enough, but it protects everyone from coyotes. Coyotes can also get over the brush but they can't do it quickly or quietly, so the foxes always have some warning if someone is trying to get in.
