The premises fire officers shut down most often aren’t factories or warehouses, they’re takeaways with flats above them.

And almost every time, it’s the same two issues:

1️⃣ No warning. A fire starts in the kitchen, and the people asleep upstairs never know, because the alarm in the shop isn’t linked to the one in the flat.
2️⃣ No escape. The flat’s only exit is through the business below, which becomes impassable once the fire takes hold.

These mixed-use buildings are among the highest enforcement priorities nationwide.

If you own or manage one:
🔗 Where the separation between the shop and flat isn’t proven to be fire-resisting for at least 60 minutes, the detection systems should be interlinked so a fire in either area raises warning throughout the premises.
🚪 Ensure the flat has a safe, independent escape route — not one that relies on passing through the commercial kitchen or servery.
🧾 Have a competent Fire Risk Assessment carried out. The assessor will check alarm coverage, structural separation between floors, fire-resisting ceilings and doors, and whether any shared services breach compartment lines.

These aren’t box-ticking exercises, they’re life-saving measures that prevent both tragedy and enforcement closure.
