Merdeka is often celebrated with fireworks, parades, and patriotic speeches, but beneath the surface lies a deeper question: what does Merdeka truly mean? In this video, we revisit the meaning of independence and freedom in the Malaysian context. From Tunku Abdul Rahman’s historic call for independence to the present-day realities of national debt, political divides, and flag controversies, Merdeka is not just about being free—it is about deciding who we are and where we want to go.

This year’s Merdeka comes at a strange time, with flag dramas, bullying scandals, protests, and the haunting call of “No Justice, No Merdeka” echoing across the nation. We reflect on how Malaysians grapple with identity, the language we use, the politics we practice, and the very idea of who gets to speak for “we Malaysians.” Is independence a promise of wealth and greatness, or is it simply the space to define our own future, even if that path is uncertain and contested?

Through questions of justice, freedom of speech, and the visions different groups have for Malaysia, this video explores the tensions and opportunities that come with being an independent nation. From the story of Zara Qairina to the looming Sabah elections, Merdeka 2025 forces us to reflect on how far we have come, and more importantly, how far we still have to go. At its heart, Merdeka is not about one collective voice imposed on all, but about the freedom for each Malaysian to shape the country’s future in their own way.
